Eyre's Post Office Directory Of Plymouth & Devonport 1882-1883

Unlock the doors to your Victorian ancestry with a detailed snapshot of Plymouth, Devonport, and their surrounding suburbs. Eyre’s Post Office Directory of Plymouth & Devonport for 1882-1883 is an essential resource for any genealogist or local historian looking to piece together family lives in this bustling naval hub.

Available as an instant digital download or on a convenient CD-ROM, this scanned directory provides a crucial bridge between the 1881 and 1891 censuses.

Bridging the Census Gaps & The "Missing" Ancestors

We all know the frustration of an ancestor who simply vanishes from the census. Just as we see today with modern government distrust, many of our Victorian ancestors were deeply suspicious of the state, fearing new taxes, conscription, or the prying eyes of the local authorities. Many actively refused to fill in the census forms or deliberately avoided the enumerator. If your great-great-grandfather dodged the 1881 census collector, there is a very high chance he was captured here instead. Tradesmen, lodgers, and transient naval personnel are heavily represented in this directory, making it the perfect "census substitute."

What’s Inside? (Directory Sections)

This comprehensive volume is logically structured, and because it is alphabetically arranged, finding your ancestors is incredibly straightforward. It contains:

• Alphabetical Directory of Residents: A complete A-Z of private residents, their occupations, and their street addresses.
• Commercial & Trades Directory: Find out exactly what your ancestors did for a living. From shipwrights to shopkeepers, this section lists businesses by trade.
• Street Directory: Perfect for mapping out exactly where your family lived, who their neighbors were, and the local layout of the town.
• Official & Municipal Directory: Lists the mayor, councilors, magistrates, and local officials who ran the boroughs.
• Institutional Directory: Churches, schools, hospitals, and benevolent societies.

A Glimpse into Victorian Plymouth & Devonport (1882)

To understand your ancestor's world, it helps to understand their town. In 1882, Plymouth, Devonport, and Stonehouse were independent, fiercely competitive boroughs united by the mighty Royal Navy.

• Industry & Commerce: The Devonport Dockyard was the lifeblood of the region, employing thousands of men. Plymouth was also famed for its booming corset manufacturing industry (producing millions of pairs of stays annually) and local breweries.
• Sports & Leisure: Plymouth Rugby Football Club had recently been founded (1875) and was gaining fierce local rivalries. Cricket was massively popular, with the Plymouth Cricket Club drawing large crowds.
• Music & Culture: The Plymouth Athenaeum and Theatre Royal were the cultural centers of the town, hosting everything from classical orchestras to bustling music hall performances.
• Famous Local Figures: In 1882, a young Robert Falcon Scott (of future Antarctic fame) was living in the area as a young boy before joining the naval training ship HMS Britannia. The streets were also walked by prominent naval heroes, influential mayors, and wealthy merchants whose names populate these very pages.
