Lake & Co's Directory Of Truro 1888

Unlock Your Cornish Roots: Lake’s Directory of Truro 1888

Are you hitting a brick wall in your Cornish family tree? The decade between the 1881 and 1891 censuses is notorious for causing genealogical headaches. People moved, married, or passed away, leaving a ten-year void. Lake’s Directory of Truro 1888 is the ultimate key to bridging that gap.

Available as an instant digital download or on a handy CD-ROM, this high-quality scanned reproduction of the original directory is an essential addition to your Cornish research toolkit.

The "Census Dodger" Secret Weapon

We often think of government distrust and form-refusal as a modern phenomenon, but our Victorian ancestors were just as wary of state interference. Many individuals actively refused to fill out census forms or deliberately gave false information to enumerators. Because directories like Lake’s were compiled by private canvassers for commercial purposes—and not by government officials—they often caught the very people who slipped through the official census net. If your ancestor is missing from the 1881 or 1891 returns, there is a very good chance they are hiding right here in plain sight!

Cutting-Edge Usability for a Victorian Book

While you are viewing exact scanned images of the original 1888 pages, you aren't stuck in the 19th century when it comes to technology. Because the directory is heavily alphabetized by surname and street, manual navigation is a breeze. However, if you are using a Desktop PC, modern PDF readers take it a step further. Using built-in Google Lens integration, your PDF reader can perform on-the-fly OCR (Optical Character Recognition) on the scanned pages. This means you can:

• Copy and paste text directly into your family tree software.
• Translate the text instantly (perfect for deciphering heavily abbreviated Victorian formatting or assisting researchers whose first language isn't English).
• Use Text-to-Speech to have your computer read the directory aloud to you, saving your eyes from hours of squinting at 19th-century typefaces! (Please note: Due to mobile OS limitations, the Google Lens OCR and Text-to-Speech features are only available when viewing this PDF on Desktop PCs).

What’s Inside? A Breakdown of the Sections

Lake’s directories were the gold standard of Victorian local directories, and this edition for Truro is beautifully structured:

• Street Directory: A house-by-house walk through Victorian Truro. Find out exactly who lived next door to your ancestors.
• Alphabetical Commercial & Private Directory: The core of the book. Tradesmen, professionals, and private residents listed alphabetically.
• Court & Official Directory: Lists of magistrates, councilors, and local government officials.
• Ecclesiastical Directory: Clergy and church officials across all denominations.
• Institutional & Educational Directory: Schools, charities, hospitals, and societies.
• Country & Borough Sections: Detailed listings for the surrounding parishes and villages that fell under Truro’s jurisdiction.

Step Back in Time: Truro in 1888

In 1888, Truro was buzzing. As the capital of Cornwall and the southernmost city in mainland Britain, it was a hub of industry, religion, and culture. As you browse these pages, you are walking the same streets as:

• Famous Residents: You may spot the addresses of Henry Jenner (the pioneering Celtic scholar born in Truro who was instrumental in the Cornish language revival) or the philanthropist John Passmore Edwards (born just outside Truro), who was heavily funding libraries and hospitals in the area during this exact era. You'll also find the names of the local gentry, such as the Boscawen family.
• Industry & Fishing: While the tin mining industry was beginning its slow decline by 1888, Truro’s port at Truro River (Malpas) was still incredibly busy. The directory is filled with shipbuilders, ironmongers, merchants, and agents dealing in Cornish copper, tin, and the booming pilchard fishing trade.
• Sports & Culture: Truro was highly cultured. The city had a thriving musical scene, including the Truro Philharmonic Society. Sports were also taking off; while Truro City Football Club would officially form a year later in 1889, the pages are filled with cricket clubs, athletic clubs, and the fiercely traditional Cornish wrestling promoters.

Important Map Disclaimer

Please Note: Victorian publishers were notoriously inconsistent when it came to including maps in their directories. Some editions of Lake’s included them, while others did not. We cannot guarantee that a fold-out map of 1888 Truro is present in this specific scan. However, if a map was bound into the original book we scanned, consider it a fantastic bonus!
