Kelly's Directory of the Isle of Thanet (Margate, Ramsgate, Broadstairs & Minster) 1888-1889 - Digital Download or CD

Product Description

Unlock the history of your ancestors living in the vibrant Victorian seaside resorts of the Isle of Thanet.

This high-quality reproduction of Kelly's Directory of the Isle of Thanet 1888-1889 is an essential resource for genealogists and local historians. Covering the major towns of Margate, Ramsgate, Broadstairs, and Minster, this directory serves as the perfect "census substitute," filling the critical gap between the 1881 and 1891 censuses.

If you are tracing family who lived or worked in this corner of Kent during the height of the Victorian era, this directory provides the snapshot in time you need.

Bridging the Census Gap

The 1891 Census is still years away, and the 1881 Census is a decade old. Families moved, changed trades, or passed away in the interim. This directory allows you to pinpoint exactly where your ancestors lived and their occupations in 1888-1889, potentially solving mysteries about disappearing relatives or unexpected career changes.

What’s Inside?

While this is a facsimile edition created from scanned images (not a text-transcribed database), it is incredibly easy to navigate. The directories are organized alphabetically by surname and by street/Trade, allowing for quick manual browsing. Note: While the files are scanned images, most modern PDF readers (such as Adobe Acrobat) now perform OCR (Optical Character Recognition) on the fly, allowing you to use the search function to find surnames and streets instantly.

Detailed Sections include:

  • Topography & History: A detailed description of the Isle of Thanet, its geology, and its evolution from a quiet agricultural area to a bustling tourist hub.
  • Private Residents: An alphabetical listing of the prominent private residents (heads of households) in each town.
  • Commercial & Trade Directory: Classified listings of businesses and traders. Find out if your ancestor was a baker, a boat builder, or a lodging house keeper.
  • Street Directory: A comprehensive list of streets and the heads of households residing there.
  • Official Information: Listings of local officials, magistrates, clergy, medical officers, and emergency services.

Life in the Isle of Thanet (1888-1889)

The late 1880s were a golden age for Thanet. The arrival of the railway had transformed these towns into the playgrounds of London.

  • Margate: Known as the "London by the Sea," Margate was famous for its Jarvis's Landing Stage, allowing steamers to dock directly. It was a hub for artists and health seekers.
  • Ramsgate: A Royal Harbour with a strong naval tradition. In 1888, it was a bustling port of trade and cross-channel travel.
  • Broadstairs: Famed for its literary connections. Charles Dickens spent many summers here at Bleak House (then known as Fort House). Although Dickens died in 1870, the town was still very much defined by his presence, and many of his contemporaries and descendants may be listed within.
  • Minster: The ancient heart of Thanet, offering a contrast to the busy seaside resorts with its agricultural roots and the historic Minster Abbey.
  • Famous Residents & Connections: This era captures the twilight of the Victorian greats. Vincent Van Gogh actually taught in a school in Ramsgate (at 6 Royal Road) in 1876; by 1888 he was on the cusp of fame in France, but his former employers and the landscape he painted remain in the directory. You will also find the names of the hoteliers who hosted the aristocracy and the shipbuilders who fueled the local economy.

Interesting Facts from the Era

  • Industry: Beyond tourism, Thanet had a thriving industry in "Thanet Sand" for building, as well as paper milling and brick making.
  • Sport: Cricket was the obsession of the day. The Kent County Cricket Club was well established, and local matches were a major social event.
  • Music: The era saw the rise of brass bands and seaside orchestras performing in the Pleasure Gardens and on the piers, a precursor to the "Pop" festivals the area would host over a century later.
