Historical Directories

A generic image
This category covers the commercially produced directories that were the predecessors of the modern telephone book. Published for most counties, cities, and major towns from the late 18th century to the mid-20th century, they are an essential tool for understanding a local community. They list residents, tradespeople, and public officials, providing a snapshot of a place at a specific point in time. Key things to remember: Historical directories are not a complete census. They were commercial enterprises that primarily listed the middle classes, tradesmen, and professionals. The working classes, agricultural labourers, and the very poor were often omitted unless they were a prominent figure in a small village. Records in this category include: County Directories: Large, comprehensive volumes covering an entire county, with separate sections for each town and village. Famous publishers include Pigot & Co. and Kelly's. Trade or Commercial Directories: Listings of businesses and tradespeople, organized by the type of trade (e.g., bakers, butchers, drapers, blacksmiths). Court and Street Directories: Alphabetical lists of private residents (usually just the head of household) for urban areas, often organized by street. Typical Information Found: Private Residents Section: Name and address of the head of household. Commercial Directory Section: Name, occupation, and address of tradespeople and businesses. Official Information: Names and addresses of local gentry, clergy, doctors, solicitors, and public officials (mayors, councillors, etc.). Local Information: Details on postal services, transport (coach and train timetables), schools, churches, and major public institutions.
