Kelly's Directory of Great Yarmouth Gorleston & Southtown 1904 - Digital Download or CD-ROM

Step into England's great herring port, street by street, house by house — and find the ancestors the census missed.

This faithful scanned reproduction of the original 1904 Kelly's Directory captures Great Yarmouth, Gorleston and Southtown at the height of their Edwardian pomp — a bustling port, seaside resort and brewing town of some 50,000 souls, whose herring wharves, medieval Rows and two piers were famous across Britain.

What's Inside the Directory

  • Town description & history — churches, municipal buildings, charities and public institutions
  • Official establishments & municipal offices — mayor, aldermen, councillors, borough officials, courts, customs and coastguard
  • Public institutions — banks, hospitals and dispensaries, the Public Library, Post Office, Fishermen's Hospital and the ancient Grammar School
  • Churches & chapels — Anglican parishes, Roman Catholic and Nonconformist congregations, with clergy named
  • Private Residents A–Z — householders of the borough, with addresses and often occupations
  • Commercial & Trades Directory A–Z — every trade from bloaters curer to wine merchant
  • Streets & Roads directory — residents and tradesmen listed street by street, so you can "walk" the Rows and the Denes exactly as they were in 1904
  • Gorleston & Southtown section — the Suffolk-side suburb and resort gets its own full directory
  • Conveyances & railways — train times from the town's three stations (Vauxhall, South Town and Beach), plus coaches and carriers
  • Period advertisements — a wonderful time capsule of Edwardian commerce

Filling the Census Gap

The 1904 directory sits neatly between the 1901 and 1911 censuses, providing a snapshot of exactly who lived where in that "missing" year — a true census substitute for the Edwardian era.

And remember: then, as now, many people distrusted government data collection. Some refused to fill in the forms, some evaded the enumerator, households were missed and names were garbled — and Yarmouth's fishermen were frequently at sea on census night. Directories were compiled independently, so if your ancestor "vanished" from the census, they may well be listed here instead — with a name, occupation and address.

Famous Sons, Daughters & Residents

  • Anna Sewell — author of Black Beauty, born in Church Plain, Great Yarmouth, in 1820
  • Charles Dickens — wrote much of David Copperfield while staying at the Royal Hotel; the Peggotty family's upturned-boat home was pure Yarmouth
  • James Sharman — first keeper of the Nelson Monument, who claimed to have served with Nelson aboard HMS Victory at Trafalgar (the town was preparing to celebrate the Trafalgar centenary in 1905)
  • George Manby — devised his famous ship-to-shore rescue mortar at Yarmouth after witnessing wrecks on the sands
  • Billy Fleming — legendary Gorleston lifeboat coxswain, hailed for daring rescues including the Diego Ramirez in 1866
  • Arthur Fell — the town's MP, found among the leading citizens in these pages
  • The Lacon family — of the great Lacon's Brewery, alongside rival Morgan's, both major local employers
  • Thomas Churchyard — Gorleston's self-taught fisherman-artist of marine scenes

Herring, Beer, Football & Music: Yarmouth in 1904

  • The herring capital — one of the world's great herring ports; every autumn thousands of Scottish "herring girls" followed the fleet south, and Yarmouth bloaters were shipped the length of the land
  • Industry — steam trawlers and drifter fleets, shipbuilding, sail and net making, ropewalks, ironworks and timber yards — all listed in the trades directory
  • Sport — Great Yarmouth Town FC, "The Bloaters" (founded 1897), one of England's oldest golf links at Great Yarmouth & Caister (est. 1882), flat racing on the North Denes, and rowing regattas on the River Yare
  • Music & entertainment — music-hall stars and promenade concerts at the Britannia Pier, the recently re-erected Winter Gardens glasshouse brought from Weymouth, brass bands on the promenade, and church choirs and choral societies across the borough
  • Heritage — one of Britain's finest surviving medieval Town Walls, the famous Rows (some 145 of them), and St Nicholas', one of England's largest parish churches
