Kelly's Post Office Directory Of London County Suburbs 1914

Product Description

Step back into the eve of the First World War with this fascinating snapshot of Edwardian life.

Published in 1914, Kelly's Post Office Directory of London County Suburbs marks a pivotal moment in publishing history. For the first time, Kelly's abandoned their separate volumes and combined the vast expanses of South and North London into one comprehensive, monumental book. Whether your ancestors lived in the bustling terraces of Islington, the leafy streets of Croydon, or the emerging suburbs of Wimbledon and Hampstead, this directory is an essential genealogical resource.

A Crucial Census Substitute With the 1931 Census destroyed by fire and the 1941 Census cancelled due to WWII, family historians often hit a "brick wall" in the early 20th century. This 1914 directory serves as a vital bridge between the 1911 and 1921 censuses, helping you trace your ancestors' movements, occupations, and exact addresses during a period of massive social upheaval. Many of the tradesmen and heads of households listed here would enlist just months after this book went to print.

What's Inside? (Directory Sections)

This beautifully scanned volume retains all the original charm of the Edwardian era and is divided into highly useful sections:

• The Court Directory (Alphabetical by Surname): Lists private residents, gentlemen, and professionals alongside their addresses.
• The Commercial Directory (Alphabetical by Surname): Details the business owners, shopkeepers, and tradespeople operating in the suburbs.
• The Trades & Professions Directory: A fantastic resource for narrowing down specific occupations (e.g., finding all the blacksmiths, drapers, or tailors in a specific suburb).
• The Street Directory: An alphabetical list of streets, detailing the head of the household or business at almost every single address.
• Official & Municipal Information: Details of local councils, magistrates, churches, schools, hospitals, and postal arrangements.

Local Colour: Famous Faces & Edwardian Life in 1914

The London suburbs of 1914 were a melting pot of industry, arts, and sports. While browsing these pages, you are walking the same streets as notable figures of the era:

• Literary Giants: Sir Arthur Conan Doyle was living in South Norwood during this era, frequently spotted around the local area, while H.G. Wells resided in Wandsworth.
• Sporting History: 1914 was a monumental year for North London sports. Arsenal FC had just moved to their brand-new stadium in Highbury the year prior (1913), and their players and staff would be listed in the local street directories. Meanwhile, Tottenham Hotspur was dominating the Southern League.
• Industry & Commerce: The suburbs were the engine rooms of London. You will find hundreds of entries for the booming printing works around Fleet Road, the massive gas works in Hackney and Wandsworth, and the thriving piano manufacturing industry in Camden Town—which employed thousands of local residents and supplied musicians across the empire.

Format & Navigation Notes

Please note: This product consists of high-resolution scanned images (PDF format) of the original book. It is not a text-searchable database. However, because Kelly's directories are meticulously arranged alphabetically by surname, street, and trade, locating your ancestors is incredibly straightforward and highly rewarding. Pro Tip: Modern PDF readers (such as Adobe Acrobat Reader) feature "OCR on the fly" technology. This means you can often use the standard search bar (Ctrl+F / Cmd+F) to highlight text directly on the scanned pages, making navigation even faster!

Map Disclaimer

Important: Original directories of this age frequently had their pull-out maps removed by previous owners over the last 110 years. Therefore, we cannot guarantee the presence of the original folding maps. However, if the maps are present in the physical copy we scanned, they have been included as a wonderful bonus!
