Kelly's Directory of the Isle of Thanet — Margate, Ramsgate, Broadstairs & Minster 1902–1903 - Digital Download or CD-ROM

Step back into the Edwardian seaside and find the people who lived, worked and holidayed on the Isle of Thanet at the very start of the 20th century. This is a complete scan of the original Kelly's Directory for Margate, Ramsgate, Broadstairs, Minster and the surrounding parishes — a goldmine for family historians tracing Kent ancestors between the census years.

Kelly's directories were the Victorian and Edwardian equivalent of the phone book, business directory and local encyclopedia rolled into one. Because every listing is arranged alphabetically by surname, trade and street, this scanned edition is remarkably easy to navigate — no index-hunting, just look your ancestor's name up the same way a searcher would have in 1902.

The Missing Census Year? They May Be Listed Here

The 1901 census was taken on 31 March 1901 — and not everyone was counted. Just as many people today distrust government collection of personal details, plenty of Victorian and Edwardian householders refused to fill in the forms, deliberately avoided the enumerator, or were simply missed: fishermen at sea, servants, lodgers, boarders and the "unofficial" residents of boarding houses.

If your ancestor is one of the many "missing" from the 1901 census, they may well appear here instead. Published just a year after the census, this directory bridges the gap between the 1901 and 1911 censuses, listing thousands of private residents with names, addresses and occupations, plus every tradesperson on the Isle.

Famous Faces & Isle of Thanet Connections

  • Charles Dickens — Broadstairs was his beloved summer retreat; he wrote parts of David Copperfield and Nicholas Nickleby at Fort House, now known as Bleak House
  • J.M.W. Turner — the great painter kept lodgings in Margate for years and famously praised its skies as the loveliest in Europe
  • Vincent van Gogh — taught at a boys' school in Ramsgate in 1876 and lodged in Spencer Square, sketching the town and sea
  • A.W.N. Pugin — the Gothic Revival architect built his home, The Grange, and St Augustine's Church in Ramsgate
  • Sir Moses Montefiore — the great philanthropist lived at East Cliff Lodge, Ramsgate, until his death aged 100 in 1885
  • Dante Gabriel Rossetti — the Pre-Raphaelite painter-poet died and is buried at Birchington in 1882
  • Major Percy Powell-Cotton of Quex Park — the explorer and naturalist was resident at Quex Park, Birchington, during the directory's dates and appears among the gentry

Thousands of ordinary folk — the fishermen, landladies, farmers and shopkeepers who are usually your actual ancestors — fill the pages between them.

Life on the Isle in 1902 — Fascinating Facts

  • Margate was one of Britain's very first seaside resorts, with bathing machines operating from the 1730s
  • The Isle of Thanet Electric Tramways had opened in 1901, whisking passengers from Westbrook to Margate, Cliftonville, Broadstairs and Ramsgate
  • Ramsgate's Royal Harbour — England's only Royal Harbour, so designated by George IV — bustled with the seasonal herring fleet, while Margate boats landed oysters and whelks
  • Agriculture ruled inland: Thanet's rich soil produced famous barley and market-garden crops for London
  • Sport was thriving: Margate Football Club had been founded in 1896; the newly opened North Foreland Golf Club (1903) was appearing at Broadstairs; nearby Royal St George's at Sandwich had hosted the first Open Championship ever played in England (1894); and cricket clubs flourished across the Isle
  • Music and entertainment were everywhere — bandstand concerts, visiting opera companies and the music-hall stars of the day played the Isle's halls and pleasure gardens each summer
  • History runs deep: St Augustine landed at Ebbsfleet in 597 AD, and Roman Richborough was the "gateway to Britain"
