The Jewish Year Book 1898 — British Jewry Year Book - Digital Download or CD-ROM

Product Description

Now in its third year of publication, The Jewish Year Book (1898/5658) captures British Jewry at a pivotal moment — the peak of the great East European immigration wave, and the first yearbooks issued since the birth of the modern Zionist movement. Published from the offices of The Jewish Chronicle, this edition records the rabbis, ministers, wardens, presidents, and committee members of Jewish congregations, charities, and institutions across Britain and the British Empire.

The yearbook is a "who's who" of Victorian Anglo-Jewry — but crucially, it also names the ordinary congregants, society members, and East End synagogue officers that national records often overlook.

Why Genealogists Need This Book

Filling the Census Gap: The 1898 edition sits seven years after the 1891 census and just three before 1901 — making it an ideal bridge across a difficult decade for Jewish research. Immigrant families arriving in the early 1890s appear in no census until 1901; this directory confirms where they worshipped, worked, and organised in the intervening years, often with community-record spellings of names that differ from census transcriptions.

Beware copy-paste trees. Jewish genealogy has centuries of "yichus inflation" — embellished pedigrees claiming descent from King David or famous rabbis, with even published works later exposed as fabricated. This Year Book is the antidote: a contemporaneous record compiled by the community itself, cross-checkable against census and civil registration records. Build your tree on documents, not folklore.
